Careers

Elementary and secondary school teacher assistants help students with lessons under the direct supervision of a classroom teacher. They accompany and supervise students during activities in school gymnasiums, laboratories, libraries, resource centres, and on field trips.

They help special needs students, such as those with mental or physical disabilities, with mobility, communication and personal hygiene. They carry out behaviour modification, personal development and other therapeutic programs under the supervision of professionals, such as special education instructors, psychologists or speech-language pathologists.

They also monitor students during recess and noon hour, help in the school library or office, and perform other duties as assigned by the school principal.

BC Work Futures predicts that 2,450 teacher assistant postions will become available in BC from 2001 to 2011*, all from the need to replace workers who retire.
