Aboriginal Culture & Protocols: A

Professional Perspective (10 hrs)

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

        This workshop focuses on promoting cultural sensitivity and awareness of protocol, customs and practices pertaining to First Nations

primarily in the Lakes District area.  The workshop will provide a brief history of Aboriginal People, a glance at current Aboriginal issues,

with the opportunity for interaction between participants to develop strategies for working with Aboriginal communities. Additional

resources for further reading will be provided.

Learn how to handle emergencies involving children. This course includes recognition of home hazards, accident prevention, and safety education skills. This hands-on course will lead students through various functions of Excel 2010 to create tables, perform specific types of calculations using formulas, filter and sort data, copy and fill functions, link worksheets, create and edit charts, and many more advanced functions of Excel. Foodsafe Level 1 (8 hrs)

All food service establishments or non-profit organizations that sell food must have a minimum of one employee with Foodsafe certification on duty at all times. Topics include food-borne illness, personal hygiene and health, serving and dispensing, protecting and preparing food, receiving and storing food safely, dish washing methods, types of germs and diseases. Certification issued upon successful completion. Students will be required to provide their Care Cards in class.

Occupational First Aid Level 1 (8 hrs)

This Worksafe BC class provides training in basic first aid skills including C-spine control, respiratory and circulatory emergencies, minor soft tissue injuries, and teaches accurate completion of the required documentation. The course also explains new modules on the identification and management of stroke, diabetes, seizures and fainting. Students receive their OFA Level 1 tickets, valid for 3 years, upon successful completion of a written exam and practical evaluation by the instructor. Participants must be 16 years of age and bring photo ID to class.

 Chris will provide students with both the theory and extensive hands on practice that will make your welding projects easier and

faster. Welding safety, stick welding, solid wire and flux core wire feed will all be covered. Students will have ample opportunity to

work on a self chosen project. Tools required: welding helmet, welding goggles, gloves, striker, soap stone, chipping hammer, and

Babysitters Training (8 hrs)

Trained babysitters are in demand! This certified Red Cross program helps young people (11+): understand their rights and responsibilities, handle emergency situations, improve child-care skills, and apply basic first aid. A First Aid Kit and manual are included in the fee. Pick it up when you register and read before class. Certificates are issued to students who successfully complete the course. Please bring pencils, a large doll, baby clothes, bottle and a bagged lunch to the class.

The CFSC is an introductory firearm safety course intended for all firearm users. Topics covered are safe handling and use of firearms and ammunition, firearms laws, and safety of storing, displaying and transporting non-restricted firearms and ammunition. There will be both written and practical examinations. CNC Burns Lake is currently taking names for anyone interested in obtaining their "Restricted" endorsement. Photo ID is required. Federal Canadian Firearm Centre is responsible for issuing required license to own a firearm, must be 18 years of age or older to receive this license, but not to take the course. Canadian Firearms Safety

Legislation stipulates that individuals wishing to acquire restricted firearms must take the Canadian Firearms Safety Course and the

 

Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course and pass the tests. Students will be responsible for the process necessary to obtain their

Restricted License. Topics covered in the CRFSC include: the evolution of firearms, major parts, types and action, basic firearms

safety practices, ammunition, operating handgun action, firing techniques and procedures for handguns, care of restricted firearms,

responsibilities of the firearms owner/user, and safe storage, display, transportation and handling of restricted firearms. Photo ID is required and students must be 18 years of age or older. Please pack a lunch.

CORE Hunter Training (24 hrs)

This program is designed for individuals who want to obtain a hunting license in BC. The following topics will be covered: outdoor ethics, firearms safety, hunting regulations, animal/bird identification and first aid. Participants must read the CORE Manual prior to course start date. Testing fees are included in the tuition, but applicants must pay a $35 licensing fee to BC Wildlife Federation. Exam is scheduled for the last day of the course. Please confirm your exam date with your instructor.

Stained Glass

During this course Jan will help you create a piece of stained glass. You will learn techniques of cutting, grinding, foiling, soldering and finishing.

On the first night you will pick a pattern and get started on your project. Students need to bring their own safety glasses and any materials you have on hand for creating stained glass. Supplies may be purchased from the instructor.

Stepping Stones

 

(6 hrs)

Create your own stepping stone. These delightful art projects look wonderful in an outdoor setting. Jan will take the class through the

process and by the end of the class everyone will take home their own stepping stone. If you have a stained glass grinder or other materials

bring them to class or you can purchase supplies from the instructor. Bring safety glasses.

Tamales

 

(3 hrs)

Learn how to make authentic Mexican tamales using masa, (corn meal), pork and chilies. This dish is steamed in corn husks and can be

made in a variety of ways from mild to hot and spicy. There is also a vegetarian option. Cindy will guide you through the cooking process and students will be sampling the finished product. $10 supply fee payable to the instructor.
