Arts and Crafts

Digital Cameras for Beginners

Photo buffs - this is your opportunity to improve the photos you take with your own digital camera. You‘ll cover topics such as: types of photography, file types, histogram and lighting techniques. One class will be a four hour field trip and the last class will be an overview of processing, manipulating, saving and storing your files. Participants must provide their own cameras. 10 Hrs

Painting Nature in Oils

Join three-time ‘Ducks Unlimited Port Folio Artist of the Year’, Wilf Schlitt, for a day of painting nature in oils. Wilf will share his approach and the techniques he uses to represent nature on canvas.  His work can be viewed on-line at www.wilfschlitt.com.  A supply list will be provided to registered students.  6 Hrs

Automotive Maintenance 

Basic Car Maintenance

Bring your own vehicle and learn how to do the maintenance yourself.  This hands-on course will cover checking the fluids and belts, replacing a flat tire, basic vehicle maintenance tips, winter driving tips, setting up a driving safety kit as well a finding the right mechanic for you.  Designed for both the new driver and the person who wants to know more about their vehicle and its maintenance.  Come to class ready to get your hands dirty and ask Chris your maintenance questions.  6 Hrs

Plain and Clear Language

Want to make sure people under-stand what you are writing? Using plain and clear language will ensure that more people are able to use your information effectively. Learn how to create clearly written text that is direct, inclusive and focuses on the needs of the reader. Good layout and design will support and enhance the meaning of the text and make the document easier to navigate. 6 Hrs

Introduction to Genealogy

Building Green Can be Cost Effective

Have you  dreamed of building that perfect house with a tiny ecological footprint?  Join Rob Macrae for an illustrated talk on the home he built and the features he included such as ICF foundation, staggered stud exterior walls and a ground source heat pump.  Learn from his experience before starting your own dream home. In the second half of this workshop, Rob will share his perspectives on renewable energy as a cost effective, sufficient resource, able to   sustain all of humanity at a high standard of living well into the future.  Come prepared to hear a different point of view.  4 Hrs

Meet the Mushrooms
Take a walk with Rob Macrae and learn about the fascinating world of mushrooms.  Rob will also present information on how mushrooms are cultivated in Japan using sawdust, making their production cost-effective  and adding value to both their agricultural and forestry sectors.   4 Hrs

Health and Wellness 

Infant Massage

Join this free class and learn the soothing art of infant massage.  Infant massage is designed to benefit your baby by:

· Strengthening bonding

· Soothing your baby

· Easing problems such as constipation, colic and minor aches and pains

· Encouraging sleep

· Creating special time with just the two of you

This is a five session course; each time you will learn how to massage a different part of your baby’s body.  (Funding for the Infant Massage course has been provided by the Children First program.)  7.5 Hrs

Multiple Dimensions of Mental Health

Are you struggling with mental health issues? Or, are you in a support position where your clients may be struggling?
Obtain a better understanding of the factors affecting stress and how to manage the symptoms that stem from prolonged bouts of stress. Insomnia, anxiety, OCD, depression and various non-organic based physical problems may all be warning signs of an underlying mental health problem.
Parts 1 and 2 will be covered in the first evening. Part 1 covers contributors to good mental health and considerations when constructing a plan to maintain positive mental health. Part 2 looks more closely at the signs and symptoms of a system in distress, acknowledging that different symptoms require different interventions. A number of strategies will be provided.
Part 3 will be covered in the second evening. It will examine the biochemistry of stress, anxiety and depression and the role of medications in relieving the associated symptoms. 2.5 Hrs
A bibliography will be provided .

Babysitter’s Training

Trained babysitters are in demand!  Learn basic child care, accident prevention and first aid.  You will receive a certificate upon successful completion. Please bring a nutritious bag lunch to class. (For youth 11 years old and older.  Manual included.   Some supplies may be required, check at your local campus for  details.)  8 Hrs

Sprockids

Register your 9 to 12 year old for this nationally recognized bicycling safety course.  They’ll have fun while developing the skills to enjoy and explore the real adventure of cycling.  The four skill areas covered include:

· Safety

· Etiquette

· Riding

· Bicycle maintenance.

The course promotes the values of respect for others, empathy, appreciation and responsibility for the environment.  18 Hrs

Outdoor Recreation

Basic Tandem and Solo Canoeing

Learn foundation paddling skills and the knowledge necessary for confident paddling activities close to shore in a calm lake environment. Gerd will cover theory, practical skills, paddling skills, strokes and maneuvers. Students are to bring a certified life jacket, paddle, bail bucket, extra set of clothing and a lunch. Gerd Erasmus is with the Recreational Ca-noeing Assoc. of BC. 14 Hrs

Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC)

The introductory firearm safety course is intended for all firearm users.  There will be both written and practical examinations.  Photo ID is required and students must be 18 years of age or older.  Manual sold separately.   16 Hrs

CORE Hunter Training

The CORE Hunter Training is required to obtain a BC hunting license.   Participants must read the CORE manual prior to course start date.  A $35 licensing fee payable to the BC Wildlife Federation must accompany registration paperwork for successful applicants.  Manual sold separately.   26 Hrs
