Prepare for your aviation career at CNC Vanderhoof!
The Aviation Business Diploma program is two year program of study designed to provide graduates with immediate pilot in command opportunities with northern air operators. The program is offered in five college semesters with a four month break between semesters 2 and 3. In addition to training to private and commercial pilot license standards, the program contains 13 university level business courses and a training experience that gives in depth understanding of both flight operations and the business of aviation.
The course package includes a float rating. You may also choose to transfer to University of the Fraser Valley at the end of the fourth semester to pursue a UFV Bachelor of Business in Aviation degree which includes multi-engine and instrument ratings. If you choose this option, you will already have completed a Private Pilot License, passed all of your Commercial Pilot License written and flight tests, and have earned Business Administration Certificate.
Admission Requirements
Admission Requirements and Application Process Admission requirements are based on prerequisites for both College of New Caledonia courses within the program, and the requirements for transfer to the UFV program. The requirements are also designed to ensure that candidates accepted into the program have the aptitude to succeed as pilots. The requirements are:
· Proof of BC secondary school graduation or equivalent, or proof that all graduation requirements will be met no later than June of the year of application;
· A grade of C+ (67%) or better in: Principles Math 11 or Math 045 or Foundations of Math 11 or Pre-Calculus Math 11, Physics 11 or Physics 045, and
· English 12 (not Communications 12) or Eng 050.
· Also recommended, but not required, are Principles of Math 12 or Math 050 and Physics 12 and Physics 050. Note: If a student must choose between taking Principles of Math 12 or Physics 12, we advise taking Principles of Math 12 for the CNC program.
· Math Placement Evaluation (EMAT) Note: Students scoring below a specified level will be required to take CNC MATH 145 prior to taking CNC ECON 201 and CNC MATH 157 in their 4th semester.
· Current Transport Canada Category 1 Medical
Additional Requirements
1. Applicants who meet the admission requirements will be required to take a Pilot Aptitude Screening test.
2. A short interview will be conducted with each applicant. During this time each applicant’s motivation, personal history, conversational English skills, and decision making processes will be noted, and the results of the initial Pilot Aptitude Screening test will be discussed.
3. All applicants who are interviewed will be asked to provide three personal references who can give insight into their background and abilities.
Flight Simulators
The PilotPlus program is greatly enhanced through the use of cutting edge flight simulation technology. The program uses two Redbird FMX flight simulators. This extraordinarily realistic equipment, with full motion and precision cockpit graphics, provides a superb addition to the previously limited flight training opportunities in Northern BC.
In addition to being fully approved for instrument flight training and instrument flight rating renewals, the simulators are used in the PilotPlus program in visual flight mode to duplicate much of the knowledge and insight for pilot decision making that is now learned through direct exposure over time to such pilot challenges as marginal weather and mountainous terrain. The final aviation course in the program, Aircraft Accident Prevention, makes extensive use of the simulators to duplicate actual northern Canadian air accident scenarios.
In addition to the 200 hours of flight in actual airplanes within the program, students receive approximately 65 hours of simulator training.
