ECOT 150 Introduction to Tourism and Ecotourism

Provides an overview of the tourism industry with an emphasis on ecotourism. Includes tourism sectors, trends, current issues and career opportunities.
3 CR
Prerequisite: None

ECOT 151 Wilderness First Aid for Leaders
Covers the management of injury and illness as well as using medical supplies available to a prepared leader. Emphasizes leadership and client pre-trip preparation. Includes the Canadian Institute of Safety Search and Rescue certification.

ECOT 152 Interpretive Guiding Skills
Covers the design and delivery of nature and heritage programs, interpretive techniques for guiding, guest relations, professionalism, food preparation, and camping skills.

ECOT 154 Leadership in Tourism
Focuses on leadership skills and includes leadership styles and responsibilities, decision-making, effective communications, group dynamics, and conflict resolution.

ECOT 155 Trip Planning and Emergency Situation Management
Covers the fundamentals of risk management, trip preparation and planning, hazard avoidance, and emergency situation management.

ECOT 160 Environmental Stewardship
Examines the relationship between tourism, outdoor recreation, and the management and conservation of natural resources.

ECOT 161 Entrepreneurship in Ecotourism
Covers the concepts and practices of entrepreneurship as applied to ecotourism businesses. Includes creating a vision, goal setting, planning, marketing, conducting research, and preparing a business plan.

ECOT 165 Natural History
Provides an in-depth study of the natural history of northern interior British Columbia, including flora, fauna, and geology. Includes species and plant identification.

ECOT 170 Avalanche Awareness
Provides an introduction to avalanche safety, and detailed weather, snow pack, and avalanche observations. Uses Canadian Avalanche Association Recreational Avalanche Course Curriculum.

ECOT 171 Cross Country Ski Touring
This course provides an introduction to the Canadian Association of Nordic Ski Instructors Cross Country Level I course. It includes warm-up activities, classic and skate ski techniques.

ECOT 173 Snowmobile Touring
This course leads to a provincially recognized snowmobile operator certificate. Includes snowmobile safety, maintenance procedures, and minor repairs for snowmobiles.

ECOT 174 Freshwater Fishing I
Prepares students to work as fishing guides. Includes BC freshwater fishing regulations, equipment, fish identification, and client safety.

Pre/corequisite: Recreational Boat Operator Certificate

ECOT 175 Rafting I
Covers river rafting instruction in preparation for guiding on Class I water. Includes navigation, rafting equipment, maintenance, and oar rafting skills.

ECOT 179 Canoeing I
Covers equipment construction and care, flatwater strokes, canoe rescue, and tandem and solo paddling. Includes British Columbia Recreational Canoeing Association certification.

ECOT 180 Dayhiking
Covers navigation, low-impact travel, route plans, group management, client care, pacing, and an introduction to heli-hiking.

ECOT 182 Horse Trail Guiding
Covers low-impact travel, horse care and farrier skills, horse handling and safety, equipment management, and client care for guides leading trail-riding trips.

MNGT 154 Applied Interpersonal Skills
Focuses on the personal management and interpersonal skills that contribute to success in the business world. Areas covered include stress management, perceptions, effective communication, and assertiveness skills.

ECOT 190 Work Experience - 120 hours
Provides workplace-based learning to build employable competencies and practice the principles and skills learned in the classroom.

ENGL 195 Effective Communications I
Introduces students to the principles and practices of written and oral communications as applied in current business and career contexts.
