Introducing E-books

This information sheet describes e-books (electronic books) that we have purchased for CNC use from a company called netLibrary.

Separately, we also provide access to a collection called BC Books Online - 650 e-books by and about BC, from Gibson Library Connections.

If you are interested in other free e-book collections, such as the Alex Catalogue, Google Books, Internet Archive and Project Gutenberg, go to our Web Subject Sites-English Literature section.

The College Library provides licensed access to 4,247 e-books from a company called netLibrary. They are from two of the company's collections:

  • The Business School E-book Collection contains 848 books, on topics of interest in all business subject areas: accounting, e-commerce, entrepreneurship, economics and global economy, finance and banking. The collection includes works from leading business and economic scholars like John Kenneth Galbraith and Peter Drucker, and key business publishers such as Harvard Business School Press and MIT Press. Titles are listed in the CNC Library Catalogue. In the catalogue search box, enter the word netlibrary to bring up all titles.

  • The Public Collection includes 3,399 "classics" - works that are no longer under copyright, from Aeschylus to Shakespeare and Zola. These titles are also listed in the CNC Library Catalogue. In the catalogue search box, enter the word netlibrary to bring up all titles, or search by author or title or topic.

What are e-books?

E-books are full-text electronic versions of published books. netLibrary is a company that provides online licensed access to these, for college and university libraries who are members of the BC Electronic Library Network (ELN). You can "read" these e-books at any workstation at any CNC campus. If you want home access, you need to first create an account with netLibrary, at a CNC campus workstation or from home using your CNC username and password.

How can I access them?

  • At CNC stations only, you can access the Business and Public Collections by going to the Library Catalogue, searching for titles and clicking on the Electronic access: links in the catalogue records. (These links do not work from home). Follow the "Try one!" example below.
  • At CNC stations and from home, if you have set up a netLibrary account, you can access the Business and Public Collections by going directly to netLibrary at http://www.netlibrary.com  Use netLibrary's Advanced Search to search by Author, Title, Keyword, etc.

Try One!

  • At any CNC station, go to the CNC Library Catalogue at http://lib.cnc.bc.ca
  • In the catalogue search box, enter the word netlibrary
  • Choose a title from the list - click on VIEW - in the full record, click on the Electronic access: link
  • You are now in the netLibrary page for that book. On the right you should see CNC and ELN logos. On the left is the cover of the book and some choices for reading it.

  • Click on View this eBook. This takes you directly into the book (unless someone else is reading it, in which case you will get a message saying "book not currently available" - try later). When the book opens, a separate window comes up, with the Table of Contents (chapter headings) listed on the left.
  • Click on a Chapter to read it. Reading is page-by-page. Use "Previous" and "Next" buttons to go forward to the next page and back.
  • To search for a word or phrase somewhere in the book, enter your word(s) in the "Search this eContent" box
  • To print a page, use the browser's Print button. Note: you can only print a page at a time.
  • To copy/paste text into a word processing document, highlight the text and use Edit-Copy and Edit-Paste functions.
  • Time limits: You can browse the book for up to 15 minutes (or longer, if nobody else is trying to access it).
  • Read later - add to favourites: If you would like to refer to the book later, or read it again, you need a netLibrary account (described below). Once you're logged into your account, you can select a book and then click on "Add to Favourites" to save it in your favourites file.

Accounts

To set up a netLibrary account, you must either be at a CNC workstation or have a CNC account (see below). At a CNC workstation, go to the netLibrary at http://www.netlibrary.com/ - click on Create an account - fill in all required fields. These include Username, Password, First Name, Last Name, Country, E-mail

Password: ****** <-- enter a password of your choice

From home, if you have a CNC account -  click here  - login with your CNC account - and create a netLibrary account as above

From then on, you can login to the site directly from anywhere using your new Username and Password. When you login, you should always see the CNC and ELN logos on the screen. If they are not there, please contact the CNC Library. Accounts will stay active as long as the netLibrary-ELN agreement is in effect. An individual's account may be blocked if they are not in good standing with the CNC Library.
