Full-text Indexes

Search these indexes by name or topic to retrieve articles for your research. Note: The first two are licensed for CNC users only (click here for information about home access).

1985- Canadian Newsstand

• Full-text articles from 44 newspapers. The Prince George Citizen is online from Aug. 1999-  Other papers have content going back as far as 1985 (click on "Publication" link to check dates for a particular title). Major papers include the Calgary Herald, Edmonton Journal, Financial Post, Globe and Mail, Montreal Gazette, National Post, Ottawa Citizen, Vancouver Courier, Vancouver Province, Vancouver Sun, Victoria Times Colonist. Note that the content varies slightly with each newspaper. In general, it includes all reporter articles, newswire articles, columns, features, series, captions, editorials and publisher statements, letters to the editor and opinion pieces, and news briefs. In general, it does not include ads and special ad sections, appointment notices, photographs and other illustrations, classified ads, obituaries and stock quotes.

1982- Canadian Business and Current Affairs Index

• Full-text of all Canadian Press Newswire stories
• Citations only to the following newspapers: Calgary Herald, Financial Post (to 1998), Globe and Mail, Halifax Chronicle Herald, Halifax Sunday Herald, Montreal Gazette, National Post (1999-), Toronto Star, Vancouver Sun, Winnipeg Free Press (to 1996) 

1909-1980+ Prince George Newspapers 

• A publicly accessible database that contains the full-text of the following newspapers, searchable by keyword: Fort George Tribune 1909-15; Fort George Herald 1910-13; Prince George Post 1914-15; Prince George Herald 1915-16; Prince George Star 1916-17; Prince George Leader 1921-23; Prince George Citizen 1916-80+ (with more to come in future years)

There are a number of good collections of newspapers online. Note that most newspapers do not put ALL stories online, or provide extensive ARCHIVES online. Use them for today's news only. We recommend:

Historical research

 

Older newspapers are stored on microfilm in the library. The Library has microfilm reader/printers available for viewing and printing articles. This list covers only BC newspapers and is arranged in date order. It includes information on other formats (where applicable), and on indexes that may be used to search for information in each newspaper.
