What we do:
The Disability Support Services team is committed to facilitating and providing a variety of services and reasonable accommodations to help eligible CNC students with disabilities to succeed in your studies while attending CNC. We will help you access many different types of services including; exam(s) accommodation, alternate format text material, sign language interpretation, access to adaptive technology, in-class note-taking, etc.
DSS also assists with ensuring you have equal access to educational opportunities at the College of New Caledonia (CNC) by working to reduce the physical, attitudinal and systemic barriers that may exist.
For more information on CNC’s commitment to students with disabilities, please refer to the College Access Policy and Human Rights Policy.
Who is eligible?
If you have verifiable disabilities such as:
- Chronic/systemic health impairments
- Visual impairment
- Mobility/functional impairment
- Neurological disabilities
- Mental health disabilities
- Hearing impairment
- Learning disabilities
- ADHD
If you require accommodations or supports because of a disability, we ask that you provide current (within 5 years) professional health care or psycho-educational documentation. You need to contact DSS at least 4 months prior to the start of a semester or program to ensure we have time to arrange for services to be put into place for the start of the semester/program.
How to access services?
You are an equal partner in your education and you are responsible for meeting deadlines and following the DSS procedures to access the accommodations and services you need.
Completing the following steps will help you on your path to success at CNC:-
- If you are considering becoming a CNC student on the Prince George campus contact DSS or check the website for more information on our services.
- Once you know you will be attending, make an appointment with a Disability Support Services Advisor to discuss your needs and learn about the services for which you may be eligible at least 4 months prior to the start of classes. Make sure to bring your documentation about your disability with you to your appointment.
- Apply for admission to CNC as early as possible. Let Disability Support Services know in advance if you will need admission or registration assistance.
Important: If you are a returning student you must make an appointment with a DSS Advisor prior to the start of classes to arrange for services for the current academic year. If you need services that require considerable lead time (e.g. interpreting, alternate format) please contact the office 4 months prior to the start of the school year.
The staff of Disability Support Services extends its best wishes on your success at CNC and we look forward to assisting you!
