Financial Aid

"Yes, you can afford College, and we can help!"

 

The Financial Aid office offers a variety of services to students who are arranging for funding to cover their education costs, including:

  • counselling students with loan issues
  • assistance with application to Student Aid BC
  • help with personal budgeting
  • Adult Basic Education Student Assistance Program (ABESAP)
  • emergency loans and hardship assistance
  • Financial Aid Catalogue and Scholarship and Bursary program
  • appealing funding decisions

Appointments with the Financial Aid Officer, are required when applying for programs such as Adult Basic Education Student Assistance (ABESAP) and part-time Student Assistance (CSG) for Prince George and regional campus students. 

Appointments are strongly recommended for anyone submitting a request for review of their government student assistance.  This is often referred to as an appeal.

Frequently used terms that will assist you to understand Financial Aid information:

 

60% Course Load 

To be eligible for financial assistance and/or awards, a student must maintain enrollment and attendance in a course load which is at least 60% of their program of study per term.

 

 ABESAP

Adult Basic Education Student Assistance Program is a provincial grant program which provides direct educational funding for books and supplies.

 

 Appeal

A request for further consideration of a recommendation or an award when one applicant can demonstrate that exceptional or extenuating circumstances should result in setting aside standard program policies.

 

 APSD

Assistance Program for Students with Disabilities is grant funding for students with permanent documented disabilities.

 

 BCSL

BC Student Loan  

 Bursary

A bursary is primarily awarded on the basis of financial need in conjunction with satisfactory academic performance plus any specific criteria stipulated by an individual donor. Generally a 60% course load and a minimum 2.0 grade point average is required to be considered. (On-Line Scholarship & Bursary  will be available after November 1, 2011)

 

 CNC

 CSG

Canada Study Grant is a provincial grant for education costs for single parents or students with permanent disabilities. A maximum of $600 per semester is available.

 

 Grant

A financial award that is not repayable, but may be considered taxable income. (On-Line Scholarship & Bursary  will be available after November 1, 2011)

 

 MSOL (Moderate Standard of Living)

The Moderate Standard of Living is a measure of the costs of living including shelter, food, miscellaneous expenses and local transportation.

 

 Scholarship

A scholarship is awarded on a competitive basis. Academic excellence plus any specific criteria stipulated by an individual donor. Students must be enrolled in a minimum of 60% of a full course load to be considered.

 

 Student Aid BC

Formerly known as BC Student Assistance Program or BCSAP, a comprehensive program of financial assistance for students  studying at the post-secondary level.
