Student Information

Preparation, Preparation, Preparation!

Marketing yourself

Don't be afraid to ask

Keep notes on your visits and discussions

Job fairs are still one of the best building elements toward career success...

Student Information

Preparation, Preparation, Preparation!
  • Know who will be attending the event, know what each employer's business is, know what types of people they need to hire, know which ones are a fit with your background, and make a plan to prioritize your visits.
  • Visit the company 's or organization's website in advance, complete the application process if you've decided to do so, and understand the recruiting procedures.

By doing your homework, you will be in the best position possible to make a good impression.

Marketing yourself:
  • Know your skills, your desires and your characteristics.
  • Create a brief personal infomercial that quickly summarizes your key employability points.
  • Make an impression by outfitting yourself in attire that makes a professional statement.
  • Use gestures and body language effectively - Shake hands firmly, make eye contact, smile!

These are the things that company/organization representatives will remember. They may ask your name, and take notes, etc.

They will be looking for your resume when it is processed through their recruitment site.

Of course, the opportunities will be there to present a highly-polished resume, so take lots of copies and keep them neat and accessible in a folder.

Don't be afraid to ask:

  • Prepare some questions to start a dialogue with representatives. Here are some suggestions:
    1. What skills and experience do you look for in people you hire?
    2. How would you describe the culture of your organization?
    3. Can you suggest ways to gain some relevant experience?
    4. Is there ample opportunity for training and advancement?
    5. Can you tell me more about the position(s) you are currently hiring for?
Keep notes on your visits and discussions:
  • Take some time while at the fair, or as soon as you get home, to record the names of the companies you visited, what you learned about employment opportunities and processes and decide your follow up strategy.
  • Sending a note of thanks or follow up questions will further develop your relationship with the company and their recruiting representative.
Job Fairs are still one of the stepping stones towards career success...

Overall, job fairs are about making an impression, not an application. Making an impression is also what organizations are trying to do.

They want to attract quality talent to apply for employment and create a mind set among students that their organization is an employer of choice.

Sometimes the result are immediate; sometimes they are longer term. Use Job Fairs as one of the tools in your basket to secure career-related employment.

By taking advantage of the resources and connections at a job fair, you are building your job search strategy from a sound foundation. Back to top
