When can I take a break in my studies?
This definition is for immigration purposes to denote students who may be eligible to work full-time on or off campus:
Registered, eligible or continuing students in all programs *except* Post-Diploma programs, are considered to be on a “scheduled break” if:
- They were full time for immigration purposes in the previous term, and
- They will resume full-time studies in the following term and
- Scheduled breaks cannot be taken in consecutive semesters – the student must be full time 2 out of 3 semesters per year.
Definition of full-time enrolment (from the CNC College Calendar):
A full-time student is enrolled in 60% or more of the full or standard course load for their program of studies. For university credit and most business management programs, this is 9 semester credits – usually three courses.
Registered, eligible or continuing students in Post-Diploma programs:
Your program includes scheduled breaks as defined in the student handbook for your particular cohort. These breaks may not align with those in undergraduate programs such as the Business Management Diploma and Associate Degrees. If you become out of sequence with your cohort (for example, if you are missing pre-requisite courses or need to re-take a course), you must consult with an academic advisor before taking a break in your studies.
