After our first week of work, we were able to travel to Zanzibar. One morning we walked down the beach at dawn. The beach was scattered with fishing boats waiting for the tide to come in.

On our first night in Stone Town we went to the night market and sampled various delicacies with many locals and other travelers. We chose what we wanted to eat and the venders would cook the food on the grills in front of us.

After a long day at the hospital we went for a tour of an African museum. At the end we were lucky to watch a traditional dance and the performers were showing other students the steps.

We met some amazing people when were in Africa; they were all very welcoming and kind. This photo was taken at Green Pasture’s Orphanage. The children loved taking photos and seeing themselves on the camera’s display screen. After we disclosed and applied fluoride varnish to the children’s teeth, we played games outside. Baraka is touching his cheek, as he did not like the texture of the fluoride varnish on his teeth but the other girls wanted him to be in the photo with us. Some of the children were very shy, while others were quite outgoing.

This was early one morning. Locals were heading to work, taking children to school and venders were preparing for their market day. One of the main sources of transportation were in the buggies seen in this photo called (in Swahili) “Bijagy”.

  • Dental Volunteer Project, Tanzania, February 2012
Here we’re visiting the Green Pasture’s Orphanage. The children learned how and why we brush our teeth and they each had the opportunity to practice brushing their own teeth after receiving their own toothbrush. This was a very rewarding and interactive experience for both the children and CNC students and we played with them afterwards.

About to walk to the beach to board a boat to go swimming with dolphins. The boats in this photo were used by locals to catch the ever-so-tasty seafood. Boats were made with character and made of wood (some were old). Many of the men occupying the boats were young men learning from older ones.

This photo was taken at an outdoor museum where you could see different huts and housing from tribes around the country. At the end of the tour there was a traditional dance show. The two women in this photo moved their feet faster than a salsa dancer! Very entertaining. To follow, the students got up to dance with them.

We are standing on a tunnel made of lava in the water. We walked across the tunnels before we snorkeled through them with 4-5 white tipped sharks! Some tunnels you had to swim through underwater. Amazing tour!

This is a photo taken at the beach where I spent most of my afternoons. Sea lions are everywhere on the beach. These two were cute and the sun set in the background made for a perfect shot of what I saw lots of on the beach.

  • International Social Work Placement, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador
WOW! We snorkeled with giant sea turtles and got close enough you could almost touch them. It was amazing to swim above them as they glided through the water with such elegance.

  • International Social Work Placement, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador
Another beautiful sunset surrounded by more seals than humans. Such interesting creatures to watch move on land so awkwardly but to watch swim in the water with such grace.

This is the wonderful class I got to spend one whole month working with. I learned a lot from them – they are amazing and kind children. Very welcoming and understanding to my lack of Spanish.

A photo of a pelican on a lava rock watching the waves break across the rocks. A beautiful moment for the bird to allow me to get so close to him. Beautiful blue water!

Our last morning in Zanzibar, my accomplices and I awoke for an early morning stroll along the beach. This picture displays the serene and peaceful stroll that it was. Along this journey we collected shells and absorbed the culture as children were digging up clams nearby and women were fishing with large nets in the water.

  • Dental Volunteer Project, Tanzania, February 2012
Amongst all of our hard work during the two weeks we were in Africa, Zanzibar Island was our two and a half days of rest and relaxation. After a full day of lounging on the beach and soaking up the sun along the Indian Ocean, I was able to capture this gorgeous sunset with a conveniently placed sailboat within the scenery. It was but a few minutes of sheer amazement and I had surely never seen another one quite like it.

  • Dental Volunteer Project, Tanzania, February 2012
This picture was taken before boarding a somewhat similar looking rickety boat to go and swim with wild dolphins. I found myself snapping photo after photo along this beach as the landscape was breathtaking. In Canada, you might suppose this photo looks sort of vintage or rustic and I though the scenery was charming.

This photo is of a boy named Ivan at the first orphanage we attended. We had set up a screening room, to which we had the children come in one by one, to see what sort of care each of them needed. In the picture, Dr. Mashaka reassured Ivan by placing one hand on his head and speaking to him in their native tongue. I feel that this photo captured the hesitancy and uncertainty of how these children felt. Never in their life had they received care of this sort and they were unsure about how they felt receiving it.

This little girl was full of life. All of us had a special place in our hearts for her. Prior to this photo I had painted a butterfly on her cheek. She ran around playing pee-a-boo with me, all the while carrying around this pink backpack. This backpack was sure to be one of her only belongings at the orphanage. I continually felt refreshed at the idea that these children could still be so happy for having so very little.

Within this picture there are two little girls sitting in the waiting room of the regional hospital where we spent most of our days providing treatment. There is nothing to this photo as I merely snapped the shot thinking they looked adorable sitting there enjoying their popsicles.

This photo was taken at an orphanage at the end of a long wonderful day. Before this photo was taken we played with the children, learned about their culture and provided dental care. This was an amazing experience and this photo captures it.

This was the second day of a different orphanage where we were able to provide dental care. In this photo we are just so happy to be with the children at the end of a fun filled day.

One of many sunsets in the Philippines. The country is known for the beaches but I think the sunsets should also make the list.

  • International Nursing Field School, Philippines, Summer 2011
Spending a few days in pediatrics was a highlight of the trip. As a group we would spend our own money to purchase medications that would not be provided. Making a difference with all the sick little ones was a special gift I was able to leave behind.

  • International Nursing Field School, Philippines, Summer 2011
On the first day of the trip I went for a walk with my camera. Children followed me asking for pictures. The kids were so full of curiosity and joy when they viewed themselves in the small camera screen. This was the first of many photos I shared with the children.

An everyday sight when walking to the city hospital; children living in extreme poverty. This picture says a lot - but reminds me of when me and a fellow student gave seven “to-go” meals away. The meals were grabbed from out of our arms within seconds.
