Alistair served as Dean of Science and Technologies until May 2001 at which time he took a position at North Island College in Port Alberni.
Alistair was a Geography Instructor at the College since its foundation in 1969. His areas of interest included urban planning and cultural geography. He served on the B.C. Utilities Commission Review of the Kemano Completion Project in the early 1990s and was Chair of the Prince George Downtown Revitalization Committee in 1996. In 1999, he was presented with the Award for Geography in the Service of Government or Business by the Canadian Association of Geographers. Dean of Science and Technology since 1994, Alistair enjoyed teaching one course each year. His interests include community theatre (he is a past-president of Prince George Theatre Workshop), choral music, Scottish Country Dancing, travel and reading.
In May 2001, on the occasion of McVey's departure, the College established the Alistair McVey Library Legacy Fund in recognition of his extraordinary support to the College Library over the years.
