Our Email

IT Services provides email services through a product called SurgeMail. SurgeMail is our internal email server and provides the following features:

• Email
• Blogs
• Web based interface
• Calendar
• Photo sharing
• File sharing
• End user controllable filters

All email sent through SurgeMail is scanned by AVAST anti-virus for the presence of viruses. This is also true of messages coming into the internal server. Any filters setup by IT Services or the end user are run and the message is sent or stored in the local users inbox.

Email can be accessed internally using an email client or browser. SurgeMail has a web based engine built into it allowing access via a web browser and that interface is called SurgeWeb.

Email leaving or coming into the College server must pass through a gateway server that scans the message for viruses and signs of spamyness. The gateway email server hosts the folowing services:

• List server
• SpamAssassin
• Distributed Checksum Clearinghouse

 The gateway server uses the following open source software:

• Postfix - email server software
• ClamAV - anti-virus scanner
• SpamAssassin - spamyness scanner
• Mailman - list server software
• Distributed Checksum Clearinghouse - bulk email detection system
• Amavisd-New - puts various pieces together to scan messages
• Various RBL's are used to block known spam and virus sources
