Dean, School of Health Sciences

I am a nurse practitioner by profession and have spent my career to date between education and healthcare. I am from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia and I have four children, 3 boys and 1 girl. I have worked in 7 provinc-es and 2 territories in Canada because my husband was in the RCMP and we moved often. My teaching has included Practical Nursing, Nursing (post-diploma, baccalaureate and masters levels), Resident Care Worker, Public Health and paramedicine. I hold a masters in adult education and a doctorate of leadership and educational administration. I have enjoyed working in countries outside of Canada to explore their healthcare and educational systems and com-pare those systems to our Canadian systems to look for improvements. Learning about the cultures of other groups by working and practicing with them has been one of the highlights of my career. My research experience has been in the area of interdisciplinary education and practice and I am interested in identifying opportunities within our 7 health science programs here at the college to implement this important type of practice with our future graduates.

It has been 26 years since I graduated as a Registered Dental Hygienist from CNC in 1992– a career that has seen me in public health, private practice, volunteer dental charity work, completing a Bachelor in Health Sciences degree, and now dipping my toes more formally into education. I am blessed with 2 grown children and I take pleasure in the outdoors, a fine red wine, anything chocolate, anything sushi-ish (new word?), growing flow-ers, and interior decorating (shall we discuss the nuances of cream, ivory and off-white paint colors?) I look for-ward to helping you advance your skills and knowledge as you progress through the Dental Hygiene program!

I have 23 years of experience in the dental field, starting my dental career in 1994 as a CNC certified dental assistant graduate. Then in 2010, completed the Dental Hygiene program at CNC. Alongside my clinic roles as a CDA and RDH, I bring heaps of general, surgical and specialty experience to the table; having filled roles such as office manager, office administration, study club development and coordinator, and a local Dental Hygiene So-ciety executive. I have enjoyed keeping current in the areas of periodontal care, office collaboration and evidence based practice and am currently working on completing my Bachelor Degree from TRU, as well as my Provincial Instructors Diploma from VCC. Teaching at CNC, in both the Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting programs has sparked a flame that I plan to nurture as working with the students and faculty has become a true passion. I am a long-time resident of Prince George but have also called Jasper, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Whistler and Aus-tralia home. As a two- time graduate of the dental studies programs at CNC, I am thrilled to be serving as one of your full time Dental Assisting faculty.
